Sarah Jessica Parker Has Surprising Reaction To Criticism Of Her Carrie Bradshaw Character

Sarah Jessica Parker may not have known it but when she said yes to playing the main character in the “Sex and the City” franchise, she was accepting oversize corsages, voice-overs filled with hypotheticals — and a lifetime of questions about Carrie Bradshaw.
And she got more Monday on “Today With Jenna & Friends” as host Jenna Hager and guest host Justin Sylvester asked if Parker ever second-guessed Bradshaw’s decisions, in the original series or its revival, “And Just Like That.”
Her answer? A simple “No.” And it landed harder than Bradshaw’s stiletto heel parading around New York City.
“It’s been such a sort of extraordinary experience,” Parker explained. “I try to describe it as being contractually obligated to play somebody else, be somebody else, for about 27 years, to behave in ways which would be illegal if I, as a married person with children, ways in which I would behave in the city or with men.”
She explained that her comfort with Carrie’s choices stems from a deep trust in showrunner Michael Patrick King and the writing team. Still, she concedes some of Bradshaw’s “controversial” decisions “give people grief.”
“It’s incredibly fun to do,” she added. “I really love it.”
And just like that … she understood her.
In a February conversation with co-star Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York in the franchise, Parker found herself puzzled by the criticism her character receives.
“What is this thing where people don’t like Carrie?” she recalled Parker asking her. “I mean, how could they not like Carrie?” Davis then told her not to worry about it.
