MLB Announcer Flushes ‘Beloved’ Broadcast Feature Away In 1 Sweet Sendoff

Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates fans on Friday got a far-from-crappy tribute to an on-screen graphic that totally looked like it read “poop” when the two teams played each other in recent years.

The infamous “scorebug” — or a graphic that shows scores during broadcasts — first appeared on fans’ screens in 2022 on NBC Sports Philadelphia, the TV home of the Phillies.

Essentially, Phillies-Pirates games began 0-0 and the score was sandwiched between both teams’ “P” logos. Fans quickly noticed that the graphic read “P00P” up until the moment either of the Major League Baseball squads scored.

But the potty humor was flushed down the toilet at the end of the 2024 season, per AwfulAnnouncing.com, as NBC Sports Philadelphia launched a new graphic for Phillies’ Spring Training games that instead featured abbreviations of each team’s names.

While NBC Sports Philadelphia+ (which airs bonus coverage of games) still featured a graphic that read “P00P” at times earlier this year, baseball fans were down in the dumps about saying goodbye to the scorebug on the main network.

On Friday, Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy dropped a touching tribute as he addressed what was “on everybody’s minds and hearts” as they tuned into the first regular season game of the year between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

“July 29, 2022, our beloved scorebug first lit up the screens here with Phillies television. It was more than just a scoreboard — it was a legend, an unforgettable icon,” he said of the graphic.

“Its name, once met with chuckles, quickly became synonymous with good times and fierce rivalries.”

McCarthy closed the segment, “As the final out arrives on its bright and brilliant run, it will be missed. Gone, but never forgotten.”
