CNN Data Chief Calls ‘BS’ On This Trump Polling Claim: ‘Way Underwater!’

CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten tore apart Donald Trump on Wednesday after the president and his allies suggested his dismal polling should be dismissed due to polls being “off” about his performance in the 2024 election.
“That is a line of BS,” Enten told CNN’s Sara Sidner.
“That is a scientific term for it, it is BS.”
The president has recently seen sour approval ratings from a range of outlets including Fox News, The Washington Post and The Associated Press/NORC.

Trump ― in response to Americans’ cratering reviews on his job performance ― has raged in recent days about polls he’s described as “fake.”
On Monday, the president took to his Truth Social platform where he declared that pollsters were “Negative Criminals who apologize to their readers” after he wins “ELECTIONS BIG, much bigger than their polls showed.”
Top Trump adviser Stephen Miller likewise fixated on polls in an interview with Fox News’ John Roberts on Tuesday.

Miller told the host that the network should “fire its pollster,” claiming that Fox’s polling pointed to a victory by former Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump “all summer long” last year (that’s not true).
Enten — who stressed that there’s “no way to sugarcoat” Trump’s “horrible” approval ratings earlier this week — found that Trump’s average net approval rating, in a calculation using five recent national polls among registered voters, sits at -12 percentage points.
“Way underwater,” he declared.
If the polls were “off” like they were in 2024 — when they underestimated Trump’s margin by about two percentage points — Enten said that the president’s net approval rating would be “pretty gosh darn similar” at -10.

“He’s still way underwater. Historically low for a president, only basically matching himself last time around,” said Enten, who added that Trump’s figure is “way below” where Joe Biden, Barack Obama and George W. Bush were at this point in their presidencies.
“So we give him the two points here and he’s still swimming with the fishes, way underwater, no matter what way you put it.”
