Grimes Slams Ex Elon Musk’s X Platform As Social Media ‘Poison’

Grimes criticized her ex-partner Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, as toxic in a Monday post on that platform.

“Ok I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is [overwhelmingly] abundantly and profoundly clear that this place – and all of these places – are a poison – a prison of utterly short form deep sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning,” the “Oblivion” singer wrote.

“The entire thing is a theatre,” she went on. “A shitty pale simulacra of a life.”

Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher, spoke out about the harmful effects of social media in another post back in April, writing, “I think it’s very unhealthy to be on social media.”

“It feels like a ghost town of depression, bitterness and pictures of beautiful women doing sext [sic] things,” she continued. “I feel like this is a massive moral failure of all the apps. And it’s causing great harm to society.”

The Canadian artist’s former partner, Musk, officially took control of X in October 2022, four years after their relationship began through conversations on the app. The pair share three children and broke up in March 2022.

Following Musk’s acquisition of X, the tech billionaire and self-described “free speech absolutist” got rid of a majority of the platform’s content moderation teams and reinstated a slew of accounts that had previously been banned for hate speech or spreading misinformation.

Those changes, in addition to a revenue-sharing program that gives users a financial incentive to post content that garners the most reactions, have resulted in what critics see as a dangerously polarized environment on the site.

In January, Callum Hood, the head of research at the Center for Countering Digital Hate, told The Guardian that “accounts on X are very deliberately posting the most naked hate and disinformation possible” in order to exploit those “cash incentives.”
