Need A New Family Mobile Plan? Here’s What Matters Most

It may seem like there are a lot of technicalities to consider when you’re picking a new mobile plan, but there are actually only a few things you’ll really want to pay attention to. Whether you’re changing your family plan, adding new lines or considering switching mobile providers, check out this guide to help you make the right decision for you and your family!

First, check how much data your family uses.

You can check monthly data usage on your current mobile bill, but if you want to see data usage per line, you can check right on your phone. Just go to your settings, where there should be a section labeled “Cellular,” “Internet” or something similar.

Less expensive plans tend to give you 1GB or 2GB per line, while others will give you unlimited data. If your family has uneven data usage, you may need a provider like Cox Mobile, which lets Cox Internet customers mix and match their data plans so their overall plan (along with their monthly bill) works for the whole family.

Where do your family members primarily use their phones?

While many providers have great coverage across the country, there are still some areas where coverage can be a bit spotty. Check out your prospective provider’s coverage map, such as this one for Cox Mobile, to make sure you’ll have great coverage in your area.

What 5G coverage do you want?

This question really means, “Do you want the fastest internet?” If you’re unfamiliar with it, simply put, 5G is just the newest mobile technology, and in the words of the FCC, it “promises consumers faster data rates with lower latency, or delays.” If you want 5G (and most people will), check that your provider has good 5G coverage. Be sure to check that your device is 5G-compatible, too!

Consider how often you use hotspots.

Being able to set up your own device as a hotspot is included in some plans but costs extra in others. Some plans even help you save on data usage by offering free Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country that you can easily connect to. If you like to work from a local café, stream videos on the go or often use data outside your home for any other reason, you’ll want to check your plan’s hotspot capabilities!

Think cost, cost, cost.

Finally (and, for many, most importantly) is cost. Some of the previous points, such as data limits and hotspot capabilities, can impact your monthly cost, but there are some other factors to consider too. Most plans offer discounts for additional lines, discounts on phone upgrades and even discounts on your home internet when you bundle, so be sure to factor that in when you compare the costs of different plans and providers.
